Two Kings on the Seashore

Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him): “There was a king among the first nations. His days and nights were passing in great splendor. One day, the star of his fortune shone, and he began to think about his hereafter, and he began to believe that all these blessings would soon be cut off from me due to the worldly comforts in which I had become lost and forgotten my Lord Almighty. My rule and kingship have made me neglect the worship of my Holy Lord Almighty.

So he left his palace in the darkness of the night and traveled rapidly all night. When morning came, he had crossed the border of his country. He turned to the seashore and started living there. There, he would make bricks and sell them, keeping some of the money he earned for his expenses and giving the rest to charity.

He spent a long time in this state. Finally, the king of that country heard about it, so the king sent a message: “Come and meet me.” But he refused and did not go to the king. The king again sent his messenger and called him to him. He again refused and said: “What does the king want with me, and what do I need from the king to go to him?”

When the king was told this, he rode his horse to the seashore. When the good man saw the king approaching him, he ran in one direction. When the king saw him running, he started running after him, but he disappeared. When the king could not find him, he roared: “O servant of Allah Almighty! I will not say anything to you, so do not be afraid of me (I want to meet you).”

When the good man heard this, he came before the king. The king told him, “May Allah Almighty bless you, who are you? And where have you come from?” He said his name: “I was the king of such and such a country. When I thought about it, I realized that the wealth of this world in which I am intoxicated would soon perish, and this wealth and government have lulled me into a sleep of heedlessness.

That is a palace of luxury and luxury where every hour is waiting for death.

Now, come out of your ignorance and change this way of life.

This is not a world to be replaced but a lesson to be learned, not a spectacle.

So I repented of all my previous sins, left all worldly comforts, and started worshipping my Lord Almighty in isolation. May Allah Almighty accept and approve of this effort of mine in His court. When the king heard this, he said: “My brother! I am more deserving of what you have done than you.” Saying this, he dismounted from his horse, left him there, and went with the righteous man.

So the two kings lived together and were always busy worshipping their Lord Almighty. They prayed, “O our Lord Almighty! Let us die together.” So they both died on the same day, and their graves were also made together.

After narrating this story, Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says: “If I had been in Egypt, the beloved of Allah, the Knower of the Unseen, the Exalted from Defilements, the Exalted.
