One Hundred Lashes on the Head
Hazrat Sayyiduna Abu Wadah (may Allah have mercy on him) regularly attended the gatherings of Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him). However, he was absent for a few days due to the passing of his wife. When he returned, Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) inquired about his absence and, upon learning the reason, expressed his wish to have attended the funeral. Later, Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) asked if he wanted to remarry. Abu Wadah expressed his concerns about his financial situation, but to his surprise, Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) assured him that he would arrange his marriage. Without delay, he performed the marriage ceremony with his daughter.
Filled with joy, Abu Wadah returned home but was soon interrupted by a knock on the door—it was Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him). He told Abu Wadah that he did not want him to remain alone after marriage and brought his daughter inside, leaving her in his home. Overwhelmed, Abu Wadah called his neighbors and informed them about the unexpected marriage. His mother also arrived and insisted that he should not meet his wife for three days, allowing her time to adjust. After three days, when he finally saw her, he was amazed by her beauty, knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah, and deep understanding of a husband’s rights.
A month passed, and Abu Wadah had not visited his father-in-law. When he finally met him, Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) asked about his daughter. Abu Wadah praised her and was advised that if she ever troubled him, he could correct her with a stick. Before leaving, Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) gifted him twenty thousand dirhams.
Meanwhile, Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan had sought Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed’s (may Allah have mercy on him) daughter’s hand for his son Waleed, but he refused. Despite attempts to persuade him, Hazrat Sayyiduna Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) remained firm in his decision. In retaliation, the Caliph subjected him to cruelty—whipping him a hundred times on a cold night and pouring water over him while he wore a woolen robe.
